Welcome
I have had a love for dogs all my life. My first dog, as a baby and toddler was old Jill, a beautiful older St. Bernard female then Boo, an older St. Bernard male. And yes, the obvious, we raised a couple litters of puppies out of them. So, when my mom couldn't find me she would go out on the farm to Jill's spot with the puppies and there I'd be sleeping on her belly or neck alongside all the puppies.
Then a little later after "Jill" and "Boo" passed, we rescued a Pit Bull and her name was "Gypsy"- she had been fought in the pits and luckily lived for us to have such a beautiful pet. As I grew and my responsabilities on the farm grew I got my first Heeler Dog--Her name was "Skeeter" and she had been beat so severely with 5 gallon buckets you couldn't walk toward one without her disappearing for quite an amount of time. Skeeter would work horses and help me train colts for 10-12 hours a day, running along side of my horse I was conditioning around the section which would be 4 miles (2-3 times a day) or working a fresh colt in the round pen for hours. I would feed her half my lunch, if we were exercising around noon on the 4-mile other wise, I would stop and go in to fix my brothers and dad lunch and we would both rest for 1/2hour after ewaiting lunch and then back at it again. Skeeter had a heart of gold and the unbelievable loyalty to back it up-I was very close to her.
As I got older and graduated to go on to college Skeeter stayed behind on the farm place with the rest of my family as I ventured on with my life-I never took Skeeter away from the only kind home she had ever known at her older age when I left for college to uproot her from what she loved. As I went a couple years in college I decided I just had to have another Heeler-so with my Christmas money one year I bought another Australian Cattle Dog-Her name was "Katie". She worked along side me loading trailers of horses, cattle and goats of all sizes and raised puppies for me for her entire life with me of 13 years. I bought a very well dispositioned Blue male "Beau" to mate with her after trying to find males that fit my standard physical and mental-Katie was excellent with kids and not a great deal of heelers out there are, Beau is just fabulous with kids-he was perfect in what I ws looking for as a mate because he is a little more laid back and always there for attention. But as Katie got older I kept a beautiful female out of her and that is Reba, I was so thankful I kept Reba back because the same day I found Katie dead from old age I found Reba's first litter of puppies after hours of searching for her, she had them under our 14' X 50' deck about right in the middle toward the back-WOW what an emotional day!! I still think of Katie all the time especially when I see Reba work because she is a replica of her mothers work tactics. They both work and parent still right here on the place--Beau is 5 and Reba 4.
I still raise the Australian Cattle Dogs and then got a crazy hair and wanted a housedog, which I chose Shih-Tzu as the breed for us due to their loving nature with children. My first Shih-Tzu was Mitzi, a perfect little black and white female, registered and I thought healthy-which to my surprise at 13 months old, Mitzi came down sick, after a week of torment and trying to keep her alive among paying $100s of money and to my surprise we found out it was hereditary Kidney Failure and all I did was prolong her pain for a week with IV's to keep her hydrated as her little body shut down and wasted away. I went back to the breeders and they did nothing, not even a single offer to help with expenses or replacement of another puppy and I had a autopsy report from the vet stating it was hereditary and nothing I could have done could have prevented this oncoming disease. I was distraught, after a couple months I decided get another Shih-Tzu, I put those people through hell with all the questions and all--they were extremely helpful and informative regarding their puppies and health histories, which put me at ease and I finally purchased Mercedes, a brindle & white female. Everything went well for a couple years then I recieved Mugsy as a Christmas present 4 years ago. We have raised beautiful babies out of them for the past couple years and that is when I decided to get into more breeds and raising dogs as a hobby--I have always loved them and now am so intrigued with every little thing and the differences in breeds. I wouldn't give any of it up ever-we have puppies each month and my daughter Payton continually plays with every puppy learning each kind by name and whether they are boys or girls, she is 4 and a bundle of help. Through my experiences of health issues and being around dogs all my life I feel I have a pretty good handle on my knowledge of raising them- although we are human and we are never done learning no matter how old we get!!
